This photograph was taken looking up the Potomac from the entry into the Amory Canal late on a spring day into the sun. Not the best example of a river photo, would have been better in the morning with the sun at my back or perhaps a little later at sunset. Might be worth another trip!

The Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers offer so many photographic possibilities as they meet at Harpers Ferry. I seem to keep coming back to the idea of accessibility when photographing at Harpers Ferry. The National Park property allows access on both sides of each river, directly above the Potomac from the railroad bridge and way above from the Maryland Heights (And Loudoun Heights which I have not even photographed yet). There are rapids, shoreline, wildlife (On my last visit I saw two bald headed eagles in the middle of the river on a rock – too far to photograph meaningfully, but wonderful for a mental image.), and people enjoying these wonderful water routes. As you explore Harpers Ferry, the rivers are always close by, look toward them as a primary photo opportunity or to frame other points of interest.
