The Railroads, Harper Ferry, West Virginia

The Railroads at Harpers Ferry have many of the dramatic features one associates with railroading. There is the tunnel through the Maryland Heights, two long railroad bridges of different designs spanning the Potomac, broad curves of track, lines running along the rivers, both passenger and freight traffic running on a regular basis and a classic newly restored railroad station. The tracks were originally owned by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad; one of America’s oldest railroads with an interesting history.

The potential for photographs is fantastic because of the number of views and accessibility. As I have mentioned numerous times, you can photograph from above and below in many areas and of the same scene along with the obvious straight on shot. The freight trains run with great regularity along with a number of passenger trains. If you are interested in passenger train photos, check the schedule at the station.

And a closing reminder, stay off the tracks and be careful, trains don’t stop in short distances, and with their size, have the right of way.
